Beginner Vermont Caddis Dry Fly Class

This class introduces new fly tyers to the fundamentals of tying the classic Vermont Caddis Dry Fly. You’ll focus on basic techniques like starting thread, tying a tail, forming a dubbed body, adding a hackle, and finishing the head. Using larger, easier-to-handle hooks and beginner-friendly materials, this pattern builds skills that transfer to many other dry flies, making it a perfect first fly to catch trout, bass, and panfish.

What You'll Learn:

Tools & Materials:

  • Introduction to essential fly tying tools: vise, bobbin, scissors

  • Basic materials: dry fly hooks, tying thread, dubbing, hackle, deer hair or synthetic wing fibers

Core Techniques:

  • Starting the Thread: Securing your tying thread to the hook

  • Body: Applying dubbing to create a natural segmented body

  • Hackle: Wrapping dry fly hackle to provide flotation and profile

  • Wing (Optional): Stacking or tying wing fibers for realistic silhouette

  • Finishing: Creating a durable thread head and securing it with cement or resin
